Director Brad Peyton’s Netflix sci-fi action film “Atlas” stars Jennifer Lopez as the titular character, a data analyst who must turn to AI to help save Earth from an evil robot (Simu Liu).

“I think this movie really shows how AI can go incredibly wrong, and here’s how it can go really right,” Lopez told me at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles.

The multi-hyphenate has experienced the exploitative side of AI, with ads “selling skin care I know nothing about” using manipulated photos of her face covered in “wrinkles.” “It’s really scary,” she said, adding, “They stole our faces straight away. So yes, [AI] is really scary.”

Lopez further explained: “I think you have to respect AI… We have to be open to all possibilities. These films about AI – especially this one – really show both sides.”

Sterling K. Brown, who plays a military officer fighting alongside Atlas, said he was amazed by Lopez’s work ethic. “Moguls are moguls,” he said. “She talked earlier today about how she has reduced her commitment level. I would have loved to see her at full power, because it seemed like it was at full power when we were together. There was always something happening.”

In one scene, Brown and Lopez’s characters are badly beaten and bruised by the villains. “We had nice little side conversations between takes,” Brown said. “I asked her if she wanted to be a Fly Girl [on ‘In Living Color’]. She had some good Rosie Perez stories.

“Atlas” is available on Netflix, where it was one of the streamer’s 10 most-watched films over Memorial Day weekend.
