Jez Butterworth’s ‘The Hills of California’ Sets Fall Broadway Run

The hills of CaliforniaJez Butterworth’s first new play since his critically acclaimed The ferryman in 2017, will premiere on Broadway this fall, reuniting the playwright with director Sam Mendes.

The hills of California begins a limited run at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theater with previews starting Wednesday, September 11, with an opening night on Sunday, September 29.

The announcement was made today by Sonia Friedman Productions, No Guarantees Productions, Neal Street, Brian Spector and Sand & Snow Entertainment, with Stephanie P. McClelland.

Broadway casting for The hills of California will be announced at a later date.

The production is currently playing at the Harold Pinter Theater on the West End, where its limited engagement closes on Saturday 15 June. The production has been nominated for an Olivier Award, as has lead actress Laura Donnelly.

The synopsis: “In the sweltering heat of a 1970s summer, the Webb sisters return to their parental home in Blackpool, an English seaside resort, where their mother Veronica lies dying upstairs. Gloria and Ruby now have their own family. Jill never left. And Jeanne? No one has heard from her for twenty years… but Jill insists their mother’s favorite won’t let them down this time.

“The dilapidated Sea View Guest House is haunted by bittersweet memories of theme park rides and overdue bills. In the 1950s, the girls rehearse their singing act every evening, led by their fiercely loving single mother. But if a record producer offers a chance at fame and a chance to escape, it will cost them all dearly.”

The creative team for The hills of California consists of Rob Howell (scenic and costume design), Natasha Chivers (lighting design), Nick Powell (composer, sound design and arrangements), Ellen Kane (choreography), Candida Caldicot (musical supervision and arrangements) and Zoé Ford Burnett (associate director).
