Spaniard Jorge Martin took a spectacular victory at the French Motorcycle Grand Prix on Sunday, with the Ducati rider fending off an all-out attack from six-time world champion Marc Marquez and reigning MotoGP title holder Francesco Bagnaia to extend his championship lead at Le Mans.

From pole, Martin was passed by Bagnaia on the first lap, but shadowed his rival until regaining the lead on lap 21. He held off a late attack from the Italian and broke clear with two of the 27 laps remaining.

Marquez, who started thirteenth, then passed Bagnaia with a brilliantly daring overtake with five corners to go on the final lap. Martin had enough reserve to win by 0.446 seconds, while Bagnaia was just 0.585 seconds away from victory in third place.

Martin’s victory extends his lead to 38 points over Bagnaia, while Marquez, in his first season with Ducati after 11 years and six titles with Honda, is a further two points behind.

Australian Jack Miller, who started eleventh for KTM, crashed out of the race on lap 16 due to his second non-finish in a row.
